Muriel Orevillo Montenegro has worked in various capacities with the United Church of Christ in the Philippines. She worked with an NGO that focused on women and children. She was the coordinator of the Justice and Peace Center of Silliman University in Dumaguete, Philippines, where she taught religion, philosophy, and theology. She holds college degrees in agriculture and Christian Education, a Master of Divinity in biblical studies, an STM in ethics and ecumenics, an M.Phil. in ethics, and a Ph.D. in systematic theology. Later, she completed the coursework for a Master's degree in Conflict and Reconciliation (all but the thesis). She was the first female dean of Silliman University's Divinity School. Together with the ecumenical church leaders, she co-founded the Philippine Ecumenical Peace Platform that pioneered in calling the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) to go back to the table and resume the peace talks.
